2012 Social Security Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA)
Social Security checks will increase by 3.6% in 2012 for some 60 million beneficiaries. As a consequence, the average monthly check of 55 million retirees will be $43 higher, or $1,229, beginning in January. Also increasing, however, is the Medicare Part B premium. The standard Part B premium will rise from $96.40 to $99.90 in 2012. Detailed information on Medicare premiums is provided below.

Part D Income-Related Premium Adjustment
Enrollees in Medicare Part D prescription drug plans pay premiums that vary from plan to plan. Beginning in 2011, Part D enrollees whose incomes exceed the same thresholds that apply to higher income Part B enrollees must also pay a monthly adjustment amount. The regular plan premium will be paid to their Part D plan, and the income-related adjustment will be paid to Medicare. The amounts by income level are below.
